What are the hours for the Guidance Office?

The Guidance office hours are from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Summer office hours are 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday. CLOSED FRIDAYS.

How can I keep up with whats going on at Whittier High School?

When can I meet with a counselor?

Students can make an appointment to see their counselor during their breaks. Parents are encourage to set an appointment with the Guidance office to see their child's counselor.

How frequently is it possible to get information on my students progress?

Progress reports are mailed out appoximately every five weeks. The report cards mailed in February and June reflect the FINAL semester grades.

Between progress reports, if you are concerned about your students progress you can contact the teachers by email and /or phone or you can have the student pick up a WEEKLY / DAILY CONTRACT from the Guidance Office.

What do course codes mean?

P- College Preparatory, AP- Advanced Placement, HP Honors, ROP- Regional Occupational Program, RSP- Resource Specialist Program, SDC- Special Day Class.

What are the requirements for dressing for Physical Education?

              Students may wear

                                          red, black or grey sweat pants or shorts

                                                                 and

                                          red, white or grey shirt or sweat-shirt.

Unless specifically directed by their teacher students are to dress EVERY day in their P.E. attire which can be purchased in the Business and Activities office for $25.00 ($12 T-shirt, $13 Shorts.).

My son or daughter is struggling academically in one of his or her classes. What can I do to help him or her?

Encourage the student to attend every class. Periodically call the Attendance Office to ensure that he/she is attending every class.

Contact the teachers to find out more information on student.

Make sure the student is reading at least one-half hour daily.

Have the student pick up a Daily / Weekly Contract from the Guidance Office and take it to all of his/her teachers. If the student does not do this, administer a consequence such as not allowing them to contact their friends.

Make sure the student attends tutoring sessions.

How do I contact my students teachers?

Do you have tutoring available?

Please check with your student's teacher for their tutoring schedule or for additional help before or after school. We have embedded support scheduled for the last twenty minutes of each class. Cardinal Wings program also offers tutoring before school Wednesday Morning from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. & after school Monday-Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

My student is behind on their units. What do you recommend?

Students should go to all of their classes, make an appointment with their counselor to request a enrollment form for night school. In addition if the student needs to make up a class or is behind in units they should plan on attending summer school. Summer School registration begins in late spring. Please speak to your students teachers and counselor if you are concerned about your child's progress.

What night schools are available?

We offer adult school at Whittier High School Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 3:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. located in room B106. Students are required to attend a minimum of two days per week.

Adult school is also available at Sierra Ed. Center located at 9401 S. Painter Ave. Students must obtain a form from their counselor in order to take classes.

I have a concern about how a teacher is teaching. / I want my son or daughter to have a different teacher.

Tell your son or daughter to arrange an appointment with their teacher outside of class time to discuss their concern. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the teacher via email, or telephone. If this still does not resolve the problem, schedule a meeting between the student, teacher, and counselor.

How can I check my students attendance?

Call the Attendance Office at 562-698-8121 ext. 2040 or 2041, or visit them between 7:30 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. Whittier High School sends a phone call home every evening for those students who missed one or more periods that day. If you would like these attendance phone calls to go to a different phone number than your home phone please contact the Attendance Office to make those arrangements.

How can I request homework for my child?

Homework may be requested through the Attendance Office at 562-698-8121 ext. 2040 or 2041 when your student is absent from school for 3 or more days. Please be aware that it takes a full day to receive all the homework. If your student is going to be absent 1 or 2 days, he/she will have to make up there work in tutorial. You may also call the teachers phone extension and request homework. It is your responsibility to pick up the homework in the Attendance Office before 4:00 p.m. the following day.
