Whittier High School will host the annual District Wide College Fair this year. Please save the date so you and your family can join us for a night of great opportunities to get more information about colleges that match your interests! Remember, getting the most from a college fair takes prior planning. Here are some tips on making the most of your college fair experience:

Before you begin

Ask yourself these questions as you begin to research college campuses.
  • Do I want to attend a large university or a small college?
  • Do I want to go to college far from home?
  • Do I prefer a rural small town, a suburban environment or an urban campus in the heart of a big city?
  • What types of majors am I considering?
  • Will I want to continue my high school sports or clubs in college? Do new extracurricular activities sound interesting?

Do your homework

Before the fair, get a list of colleges attending. Choose your top schools that particularly interest you and research them prior to attending. Also write down any questions that you might have about any specific college.

Scout it out

Once you arrive at the college fair, take some time to walk through the room before stopping at any booths. Get a feel for how the room is set up. Then head for the first college on your list. It is important for both the student and the schools, that the student not go from table to table just signing up. Make sure to visit the booths of the colleges on your list and do not sign up to get on the mailing lists of colleges that do not interest you.

Ask questions

It can be intimidating for some students to ask questions of the college representative, but keeping quiet will not get you the information you need.

Browse

Once you have talked to everyone on your list, go back and explore the other colleges there. You may find an interesting one that you had not considered before. However, be aware of information overload. It is not a competition. You could end up feeling overwhelmed by obtaining too much information from to many schools.

Follow up

When you get home, look through the information you have collected, including the answers to your questions. If you did not receive the answers to all of you questions, feel free to contact the representatives that you met. This is the purpose of the college fair: to make contact with the colleges that you are interested in. If you find that you have an interest in a school... find out more!!!
