What is AVID?
A college preparatory program
An academic elective class
A program that helps students qualify for attendance to a four-year college or university
AVID Objectives
To provide academic instruction and support to students
To prepare students for eligibility to a four-year college or university
Reinforce students college level skills and habits
To increase the coping skills of program participants
To motivate program students to seek a college education
To increase the participant's level of career awareness
What Do We Do in AVID?
Tutoring from college tutors
Implementing WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading)
Developing college success strategies
Applying for colleges, scholarships , and FAFSA
Career exploration and creating a professional portfolio
Visiting college campuses
Interacting with guest speakers
College admission preparation
Participating in extracurricular activities and community service
Engaging in Socratic Seminar/Philosophical Chairs
Collaborating in group tutorials with college tutor support
Who May Participate?
Students who have the potential and desire to attend a four-year college and
Have appropriate classroom behavior
Have
a
minimum 2.0 GPA
Have a good attendance record
Are willing to commit themselves to a minimum of two hours of homework each night
Are willing to commit to enrollment in a rigorous college preparatory sequence of courses
Are willing to complete the required hours of community service per year
