The test is designed to show how ready you are for college-level work. It’s typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. As of 2024, the SAT is now digital and takes about 2 hours to complete. Each section is scored on a scale, and the total score ranges from 400 to 1600. While some colleges still require or recommend SAT scores, many schools—especially in California—have gone test-optional, meaning you may not need it for admission. It’s always a good idea to check the specific requirements of the colleges you're interested in.
These test dates and deadlines apply to all students—U.S. and international—taking the SAT.
*Fee waivers are available for eligible students*
The ACT (American College Test) is a standardized test used by many colleges and universities to evaluate applicants for admission. Like the SAT, it helps show how prepared you are for college.
The ACT includes four main sections:
English
Science
There is also an optional Writing (essay) section that some colleges may require. The test takes about 3 hours without the essay and about 3 hours and 40 minutes with it. Each section is scored from 1 to 36, and your overall ACT score is the average of the four main sections, also on a 1–36 scale. Some colleges still use ACT scores in admissions, but many—especially in California—have gone test-optional, meaning submitting scores is not required. Always check with the colleges you're applying to for their current testing policy.
