Whittier High School AVID Program

What is AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an elective college preparatory system that prepares students to attend a four-year college or university upon high school graduation. Our students spend four years in our elective class developing the critical skills needed to gain acceptance and succeed in higher education.

In the AVID elective, students learn and practice time-tested methodologies that build academic rigor, self-efficacy, and accountability. We center our daily instruction around WICOR strategies:

  • Writing to Learn

  • Inquiry

  • Collaboration

  • Organization

  • Reading to Learn

Additionally, dedicated college tutors collaborate within the classroom to support students through small-group inquiry sessions and the Socratic method, guiding them through difficult academic concepts across all subject areas.
